A simple picture of chocolate cake caused quite a stir in the Hollow Knight community last week. It all started when William Pellen, one of the developers at Team Cherry, changed his social media profile picture to a slice of cake and posted “something big is coming, keep your eyes closed tomorrow” on January 15.
This happened right before Nintendo announced their new Switch 2 console on January 16. Learn all the details about the incident and where the Hollow Knight: Silksong development stands now.
Fans who have been waiting for Hollow Knight: Silksong for over five years got really excited and started looking into every detail. They found out the cake picture came from a recipe website called Bon Appétit, posted on April 2, 2024. Since Nintendo just announced they’re showing more of the Switch 2 on April 2, 2025, fans thought they had found a hidden message about the game.
But Matthew Griffin, who handles marketing at Team Cherry, had to step in and clear things up. He reached out to a popular Hollow Knight YouTuber named fireb0rn to say there wasn’t any hidden message in the cake picture. Griffin then posted on X/Twitter to tell everyone that “the game is real, progressing, and will release.”
Hollow Knight: Silksong was first announced in 2019. Back then, it was supposed to be just an add-on to the first game, but Team Cherry decided to make it into a complete new game instead. When they first told everyone about it, they said it would come out on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. But that was six years ago, and things might have changed since then.
Some fans aren’t happy that Team Cherry doesn’t talk about the game’s progress more often. But when you think about it, with only three people working on the game, they’re probably more focused on actually making it than talking about it.
For now, we know these things for sure: the game isn’t canceled, it’s still being worked on, and it will come out eventually. As for when that might be or whether it’s coming to the Switch 2 – your guess is as good as mine and lastly, Team Cherry’s message is clear: Silksong lives on, even if its release date remains as mysterious as the depths of Hallownest itself.
