From my experience, the key to playing Doctor Strange effectively is managing your Dark Energy buildup while protecting your team. I start most engagements by positioning myself slightly behind my team’s frontline, using Daggers of Denak to build up Dark Energy. What makes Strange unique is his ability to switch between aggressive and defensive plays seamlessly.
When I see enemy ultimates coming or heavy damage incoming, I quickly pop Shield of the Seraphim to protect my teammates. The shield’s 800 HP might seem like a lot, but it can break quickly under focused fire, so timing is crucial. I’ve learned to save it for crucial moments rather than keeping it up constantly.
One of my favorite tactics is using Cloak of Levitation to gain height advantage, then placing portals with Pentagram of Farallah to create unexpected angles for my team. This lets our damage dealers attack from completely safe positions while I maintain a frontline presence.
The trickiest part I’ve found is managing the Price of Magic passive. When my Dark Energy gets too high, I get hit with anti-healing, which can be deadly in intense fights. I’ve learned to regularly release the energy using Maelstrom of Madness, even if I’m not hitting multiple targets. It’s better to deal less damage than to be unable to receive healing at a critical moment.
Countering Doctor Strange requires understanding his defensive rotation and exploiting gaps in his protection. His relatively low base health of 650 makes him vulnerable when caught without the Shield of the Seraphim.
Focus on baiting out his shield early in fights, then capitalize when it’s on cooldown. Pay attention to his Dark Energy meter – if it’s maxed out, he can’t receive healing, making him an easier target.
