League of Legends starts 2025 with its biggest change yet – themed seasons. The first season takes players to Noxus, one of the most powerful regions in Runeterra. If you’ve watched the latest Arcane episodes, you’ll recognize this as Mel Medarda’s homeland, where power and ambition rule the streets.
The game changes go beyond just a fresh coat of paint. When you log in tomorrow, you’ll see Summoner’s Rift transformed with Noxian architecture, hear new music that captures the region’s militant spirit, and face a new objective that could turn the tide of your matches. The developers have also used this theme to introduce meaningful updates to ranked play, champion designs, and game modes.
Let’s break down everything discussed in the latest Dev update and everything new coming to League this season, from the Noxian invasion of Summoner’s Rift to the latest champion joining the roster. Whether you’re a ranked player looking to understand the new systems, or a casual player interested in the themed content, this League of Legends Dev Update recap covers all the major changes you need to know about.
The biggest addition is Atakhan, the Bringer of Ruin, a new objective spawning at 20 minutes on either side of the map.
Along with permanent terrain changes, Atakhan offers unique buffs to the team that defeats him.
The update also brings new runes, items, changes to teleport, and a system called Feats of Strength that gives access to more powerful boots. This year sees only one ranked reset, happening tomorrow, making your climb more focused.
Following her journey after Arcane, Mel Medarda arrives in Noxus with a completely new appearance that embraces her Noxian heritage. Her most notable ability, Rebuttal, introduces projectile reflection to League. If Yasuo, Braum, or Samira could block it, Mel can reflect it back.
This works with both targeted spells and skillshots – Veigar’s ultimate returns to him, while abilities like Lux binding or Nami bubble shoot back toward their source.
Reflected spells keep their original properties: Annie’s stun remains a stun, and Nidalee’s spears still deal more damage at range. All the abilities weren’t showcased but we are quite sure they will follow up soon!
The season spans eight patches divided into two Acts, each with its own Battle Pass. The first wave of skins, Masque of the Black Rose, launches tomorrow. These skins connect directly to the characters shown in recent cinematic. Elise comes with the free pass, while Samira, Renata Glasc, and Vladimir are part of the paid version. Katarina gets the Prestige treatment as the Act One Battle Pass capstone.
For Prestige collectors, this season brings four skins: Katarina and Darius through Battle Passes, with Cassiopeia and Qiyana available for Mythic Essence.
The developers are exploring three new directions for Prestige skins: maintaining the current style with subtle thematic elements, focusing more on the theme with added flair, or a mix depending on the champion.
Starting next patch, you’ll always have an additional mode alongside Summoner’s Rift and ARAM. All Random URF kicks off Act 1, while Act 2 brings a revamped Arena mode. The Arena gets a Noxian makeover based on gladiator pits, introducing Guests of Honor – a voting system where players choose famous Noxians to modify game rules.
This replaces the previous cameo system. The update also includes new items, augments, and improvements to maps like Koi Pond based on player feedback.
LeBlanc receives a visual update later this season to match her appearance in the cinematic. Beyond Noxian content, expect returning thematics like Cafe Cuties and new ones, including Shaco’s first Legendary skin themed around cats.
The season maintains three Victorious skins despite the single-ranked reset. Radiant Serpent Sett celebrates the Year of the Snake as an Exalted skin, with Mordekaiser receiving the season’s second Exalted skin.
The competitive scene introduces Full Fearless Draft in Split 1, banning champions picked in previous games within a series. This debuts at the First Stand Tournament (March 10-16) at LoL Park in Seoul, with the winner securing a second regional bye at MSI 2025.
MSI heads to Vancouver (June 27-July 12), while Worlds 2025 spans Beijing (Play-Ins, Swiss Stage), Shanghai (Quarters, Semis), and Chengdu (Finals).
Looking ahead, 2026 brings First Stand to Brazil, MSI to Korea, and Worlds to North America. 2027 sees First Stand in Southeast Asia, MSI in Europe, and Worlds returning to Korea.
This season represents a significant shift in how League connects its various elements – from gameplay to lore, cosmetics to esports. With regular updates planned and more surprises in store for Season Two, 2025 promises to be an exciting year for League of Legends players of all types.
