Are you looking to dominate the mid lane in Honor of Kings? You’ve come to the right place. As a dedicated player who has spent countless hours analyzing and playing all the different mages in HoK, I’m excited to share this comprehensive tier list that will help you make informed choices for your ranked games.
Tier | Champions |
S | Shang Guan, Kongming, Ziya |
A | Angela, Mai Shiranui, Heino, Princess Frost, Gan and Mo, Milady, Xiao Qiao, Liang, Diaochan |
B | Dr. Brian, Da Qiao, Gao, Sima Yi, Lady Zhen, Zhou Yu, Daji, Nuwa, Mozi, Yuhuan |
C | None |
Shangguan | Kongming | Ziya |
The undisputed queen of mid-lane right now. What makes Shang Guan particularly devastating is her ability to bypass frontline threats and directly target crucial backline enemies. While her early game feels slow before level 4, she transforms into a roaming powerhouse once she unlocks her ultimate. The key to success with Shang Guan lies in mastering her combos – they’re the difference between dominating or dying.
Kongming exemplifies consistency throughout the game. Their exceptional mobility across the map, combined with superior wave clear abilities, makes them a formidable presence. What sets Kongming apart is their flexibility to excel in both jungle and mid roles, maintaining reliable damage output from early to late game. This versatility makes them a safe yet powerful choice for any team composition.
As one of the newest additions to the roster, Ziya brings a unique late-game scaling through their level-cap-breaking passive. Their incredible power comes with the caveat of being quite squishy, demanding masterful positioning. However, this vulnerability is well compensated by their devastating damage output and remarkably low cooldowns on abilities. A well-played Ziya in the late game can single-handedly turn the tide of any match.
Angela | Mai Shiranui | Heino | Princess Frost |
Gan and Mo | Milady | Xiao Qiao | Liang |
Diaochan |
The early game bully of mid-lane, Angela establishes dominance from minute one. Her massive burst damage potential makes her particularly effective against immobile compositions. If you’re looking to create early-game pressure through ambushes and aggressive plays, Angela should be your go-to pick. She excels particularly well against teams that need to fight at close range or lack mobility options.
Mai requires a complete mindset shift, playing more like an assassin than a traditional mage. Success with Mai comes from understanding the precise timing of her diving combinations and knowing when to strike. Her ability to eliminate ADCs efficiently makes her a constant threat, but this high-risk playstyle demands excellent mechanical execution and game knowledge.
Heino’s strength lies in his adaptability between mid and top lanes. In mid, he excels with a burst-focused build, while top lane allows for a more resilient, sustained damage approach. His reliable wave clear and poke make him a safe laner, while his ultimate provides both repositioning and healing. This self-sufficiency makes him particularly effective against heavy assassin compositions.
While Princess Frost may lack the explosive burst of S-tier picks, she makes up for it with consistency. Her balanced kit provides steady damage output alongside reliable crowd control, making her an excellent team fighter. She particularly shines in coordinated play where her utility can be maximized by teammates, though she does require a secondary damage dealer to fully maximize her potential.
A harassment specialist who excels at long-range combat, Gan and Mo can make life miserable for enemy laners. Their impressive range allows them to safely poke enemies while farming, and in the late game, they can delete squishies with well-placed skill shots. Their strength lies in controlling space and forcing enemies to respect their zone control.
A unique addition to the mage roster, Milady specializes in tower pushing without requiring minion waves. While she might not shine as brightly in traditional 5v5 teamfights, her split-pushing potential makes her a nightmare to deal with in solo queue games. Smart Milady players can create immense map pressure and force enemies to constantly respond to her pushes.
Don’t let her simple kit fool you – Xiao Qiao is a late-game powerhouse. She maintains decent damage throughout the game, but once she hits her power spikes, her basic abilities and ultimate can devastate out-of-position enemies. She particularly excels against poke compositions that lack strong dive potential.
In a meta dominated by assassins and warriors, Liang shines bright. His crowd control abilities and single-target lockdown make him an excellent counter to heavy dive compositions. He’s particularly effective against teams that rely on siege strategies, as his control abilities can completely disrupt their positioning.
A master of harassment, Diaochan excels at making the enemy laner’s life difficult. Her slippery playstyle, combined with consistent damage output, makes her particularly effective against teams that lack strong crowd control. She’s especially potent when facing tanky compositions that can’t quickly close the gap to threaten her.
Mozi | Daji | Dr. Brian | Yuhuan |
Nuwa | Da Qiao | Sima Yi | Gao |
Lady Zhen | Zhou Yu |
While Mozi sits at the top of B-tier and nearly made it to A-tier, its hybrid support-mage nature slightly limits its solo carry potential. Its reliable crowd control and above-average durability make it valuable in team-oriented compositions. In coordinated play, their utility can turn team fights, but they struggle to single-handedly carry games in solo queue.
Similar to Angela in her early game prowess, Daji falls short in terms of raw burst damage. While she maintains decent pressure throughout the game, her impact diminishes compared to other mages as the game progresses. However, she can still be effective when played aggressively in the early game to snowball an advantage.
A unique pick for those who prefer a more methodical playstyle, Dr. Brian thrives in teams that focus on sustained damage rather than burst. While his overall damage output might feel underwhelming compared to other mages, his kit increases overall sustain of your comp.
While capable in mid-lane, Yuhuan’s true potential shines in the jungle. Her mid-lane presence feels somewhat muted compared to her jungle impact, where she would actually rank as an A-tier pick. Consider her for mid only when you’re highly comfortable with her kit or need specific synergies with your team composition.
A control mage who requires patience, Nuwa’s power curve takes time to manifest. Her crowd-control abilities make her useful in team fights, and her late-game damage can be respectable, but the current fast-paced meta often doesn’t allow her the time needed to reach her full potential.
Though playable in mid, Da Qiao finds her true calling in the support role. Her mid-lane presence can feel underwhelming compared to dedicated mid laners, but she can still be effective when your team needs additional utility from the middle lane.
An assassin-mage hybrid, Sima Yi brings high damage potential but lacks the utility that makes other mages more versatile. While he can effectively eliminate priority targets, his limited crowd control options can leave your team wanting in terms of utility. He performs better in the jungle role where his assassination potential can be better utilized.
Gao’s biggest weakness lies in his heavy reliance on his ultimate ability. While powerful when his ultimate is available, the downtime between uses leaves him vulnerable and less effective than other mages who maintain consistent impact throughout fights.
Often compared to Princess Frost due to similar playstyles, Lady Zhen unfortunately falls short in terms of utility, damage output, and crowd control effectiveness. While she can be effective in certain situations, she generally offers less impact than her A-tier counterpart.
While Zhou Yu can contribute effectively to team fights, his limited 1v1 potential makes him vulnerable in the current meta. His damage output feels underwhelming compared to other mages, particularly in situations where he needs to hold his own in the lane or during skirmishes.
The current meta favors mages who can either provide consistent damage output or create high-impact plays through mobility and burst damage. S-tier picks like Shang Guan and Kongming dominate because they excel in both aspects while having few exploitable weaknesses.
When choosing your mid lane mage, consider your team composition needs, mechanical skill level, the enemy team’s composition, and your preferred playstyle. Remember that while this tier list reflects the current meta, player skill and comfort with a champion often matter more than tier placement. Practice your chosen mage extensively, and you’ll find success regardless of their tier.
