Fortnite New Text Chat System: Everything You Need to Know
Text chat is finally getting a major upgrade in Fortnite. Starting December 10, you’ll be able to chat with other players across all Fortnite islands. This new system makes it much easier to communicate with your teammates and friends, whether you’re planning your next move or just hanging out. Let’s break down exactly how it works and what you need to know.
All Three Chat Channels in Fortnite
- Party Channel: Think of the Party Channel as your own private group chat that stays with you wherever you go in Fortnite. As soon as you join a party, you’re automatically connected to this channel. You can chat with your party members no matter which island you’re playing on, and the conversation keeps going until you leave Fortnite or switch parties.
- Game Channel: It is the new public chat space that lets you talk to other players on the same island as you. It’s worth noting that not every island will have this feature – it’s up to the island creators to decide if they want to include it. Some creators might set it up so you can chat with everyone on the island, while others might limit it to just your team. The chat stays active as long as you’re on that island.
- Direct Messages: Want to have a private conversation with a friend? That’s what Direct Messages are for. You can only message people who are on your friends list (either Fortnite friends or platform friends) and who are currently online. To start a DM, you can either:
- Hit the “+” button when you have text chat open
- Click the ‘DM’ button on your friend’s profile
How to Use Text Chat in Fortnite?
Using the new system is pretty straightforward. Once you open the chat window, you can easily switch between your different chat channels. Even if you close the chat to focus on playing, you’ll still see previews of new messages as they come in, so you won’t miss anything important.
Text chat is a pretty useful tool to have in Fortnite. You’ll probably find yourself using it most when you need to tell your teammates about enemy locations or when you’re trying to decide where to drop.
